A unique building in a stunning coastal setting built within a Victorian dry dock.
The museum tells the story of Barrow and its rapid growth from a small farming village in the early nineteenth century, to a town framed throughout the world for its industrial production and innovation.
Displays include our new film show, a collection of spectacular ship models, interactive computer kiosks, Shipbuilders to the World and the social history of Barrow. Our landscaped waterfront site has an adventure playground and walkways linked to the Cumbria Coastal Way.
Strollers coffee shop offers a tempting range of meals and home made cakes. A vibrant exhibitions and events programme is scheduled throughout the year. The museum offers access for all and provides wheelchairs, hearing loops, Braille and adapted toilets.

The Museum tells the story of Cumbria's County Infantry Regiment and local Militia, Volunteer and Territorial units from 1702 to the present day and is located within the magnificent surroundings of Carlisle's medieval castle, the Regiment's home since 1873. Two floors of displays including uniforms, weapons, equipment, medals, silver, pictures, memorabilia and dioramas reflect the Regiment's long and distinguished history of service all over the world and in many theatres of war from Burma to Bosnia.
The Museum maintains an archive which is available by appointment and enquiries are welcome. School visits are welcome and handling sessions provided on request. Pre-booked educational visits in term time are free.

Soundwave is the home of the Cumbria Youth Music Action Zone, one of 24 similar zones in the UK, set up by national charity Youth Music to provide music-making activities to young people who might not otherwise have the opportunity.
From folk to thrash metal, drumming to 'live' sound engineering, there's something musical for everyone under 18 around the county, regardless of how much experience you already have- beginners are always welcome!
Theatre by the Lake is a year-round professional producing and presenting theatre which provides a service through the performing arts to communities of, and visitors to, Cumbria. The core programme is home-produced professional drama productions, including a six month summer season of six plays in repertoire, a major Christmas production and at least one other production in the Spring of each year.
