Burn The Negative - In The Atmosphere

Cumbrian band Burn The Negative have been dubbed The Guardian's band of the day, click here for that, they have played Matter at the O2 in London and have even got some summer festival performances lined up!

Opening with Life in Hansa it is quite an 80s influenced track just made up of synths. Lights starts the dance feel of the album and it has guitars, beats, synths and vocals showing off a very cool twist to the current modern electro sound by adding live instruments and a slightly retro Depeche Mode feel. Very danceable track which sets the pace for the majority of the album.

Low follows and it is another highly club oriented track and is one of my favourite tracks. Camden is next and it is slightly slower but still has solid dancebeats and the bass seems to stand out very well. Recent single Wonder Why has some excellent guitar work in it and great vocals and is another of my personal favourites. Hero in Tokyo is like an interlude and is a nice break from the pounding drums. It provides a good rest before Only For Tonight comes in and that is my favourite track as it is very energetic and has a good balance of the electronic elements and the live instruments. You Control Me was on their Myspace for a while before the album came out and I think it has a Killers/Depeche Mode feel about it as it is slightly calmer and slower but still has solid beats. Travelogue is another of my highlights with a heavy emphasis on the vocals. Change is a contrast to the previous track and has a slow, epic feel to it which leads in to She Said She Said which is probably the fastest track on the album and I would imagine to be a live favourite. And the album closes with Time and Secret Garden which gradually bring the pace down.

Very impressive debut album that brings different ideas to dance music and as such I would imagine it having a broad appeal to listeners of indie and electropop music as well as dance music fans.

Some remixes as bonus tracks would have been a nice touch as I think the remixes are only out on vinyl or MP3 but this is a minor complaint! 8 out of 10 and I will review their live show when I see them perform in the summer.
