The Green Room's 2010 season kicked off with this hilarious spoof of the classic Miss Marple style whodunnits. Even one of the lead characters is named Miss Maple so it was a play that certainly did not take itself seriously!
It is set in a country manor house in the 1930s and featured hilarious characters such as Colonel Charles Craddock, the servant Bunting and Inspector Pratt. Even the more "serious" characters such as Pierre and Margaret had plenty of funny lines.
The cast consisted of several who have performed at the Green Room before such as Frank Wilson as Bunting and the comedy duo James Spark and Michael Spencer, along with some newcomers including the two young actors who played Constable Tompkins and Pierre Marceau who I hope will feature in many more productions.
The plot of the play had several twists and turns and even though it was a comedy the plot cleverly kept the audience guessing who done it with all characters having motives for murder and having connections with the deceased.
The play had great performances by all the cast and it had plenty of double entendres, visual gags and light innuendos to keep us laughing! The ending especially was hilarious as we thought the case had been solved but in classic fashion the true killer did not get unveiled until the very end.
Overall an excellent start to the new year at the theatre!
