February 10 2009 has been designated Safer Internet Day by the EC funded project Insafe.
Safer Internet Day takes place each year in February to promote safer and more responsible us of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world
Since the first edition in 2004, participation in this event has been steadily growing, with an increase in general awareness, stronger involvement of relevant stakeholders in the field of internet safety and a high level of media interest.
In 2008 over 120 organisations in 56 countries took part in Safer Internet Day celebrations, organising local, national and pan-European events ranging from safety sessions in schools and competitions for young people to public meetings and conferences.

To promote SID in Cumbria the following event is taking place:
Year 6 pupils from Eaglesfield Paddle, Stanwix, Barrow Island and Stramongate Schools will be in the town centres of Cockermouth, Carlisle, Barrow and Kendal. The children will be provided with brightly coloured T shirts with "I love the Internet, Please keep me safe" printed on. There will also be a placard displaying fictitious personal details, the idea being if you wouldn't walk around with this information why give it out online. In all areas either a police officer and or NSPCC officer will be in attendance to make sure the correct message gets promoted.
The Information Commissioner has some information on how to stay safe when using Social networking communities such as Facebook or Bebo. Click here for the info.
